Common uses

• Websites often use a vertical bar to separate menu items or parts of a page title, as in Home | About.
• In mathematics, bars around a number mean its absolute value, so |-3| is 3.

Less common uses

• In Unix shells, | pipes the output of one command into the next, as in ls | sort.
• In many programming languages, || means logical or.
• Markdown tables use | to separate columns.
