Backslash
Also called reverse solidus or backward slash.
How to type it
Right pinky.
Common uses
- Windows file paths separate folders with backslashes, as in C:\Users\Ada.
- Web addresses use forward slashes, so a backslash in a URL is usually a mistake.
Less common uses
- In code, a backslash is an escape character: \n in a string means a new line.
- ASCII added the backslash in the 1960s so that programming languages could write the logical operators /\ and \/.
