Registered trademark sign
Also called circle R.
How to type it
Mac: Option + R. Windows: Alt + 0174 on the number pad.
Common uses
- The registered sign follows a brand name or logo to show that it is a registered trademark.
- It usually appears as a small raised mark after the name, as in Brand®.
Less common uses
- Only a mark registered with the national trademark office may carry ®, and using it on an unregistered mark can be improper.
- The ™ sign is the counterpart for a mark that an owner claims but has not registered.
- Many writers leave the ® off after the first mention of a brand in a long text.
