En dash
Also called nut dash.
How to type it
Mac: Option + -. Windows: Alt + 0150 on the number pad.
Common uses
- An en dash joins the ends of a range, as in pages 10–20 or the years 1990–1999.
- It stands for to or through in scores and routes, such as a 3–2 win or the Boston–Chicago flight.
Less common uses
- The en dash is named for the en, a unit half the width of an em, traditionally compared to a capital N.
- It is longer than a hyphen and shorter than an em dash, and each of the three has its own job.
- Chicago style uses an en dash in compound adjectives when one part is itself two words, as in New York–style pizza.
